Types of Archery

There are several forms of archery. Greenbank Company of Archers is primarily a ‘target’ archery club.

Target archery is the current Olympic form of the sport and the discipline in which Great Britain’s Men and Ladies have won individual and team medals at recent Olympic Games. Both the men and ladies of the disabled archery team have also won several gold, silver and bronze Paralympics medals since 1988.

Target archery is the most popular form of archery. There are set ‘rounds’ to shoot, in which members shoot a given number of arrows at varying distances on a flat terrain. The arrows are shot at the traditional circular archery target with the gold in the middle (where we all aim for!!) There are shorter rounds and distances for juniors to shoot.

Outdoors in the summer we shoot longer distances on larger target faces, we also have the great British weather to content with, which brings a whole new set of challenges! Indoors during the winter we shoot special indoor rounds, with smaller target faces and shorter distances.

Occasionally we have a ‘Clout’ archery evening. This is very similar to target archery and takes place outdoors. The archer attempts to drop arrows at long range (180 yards for the men and 140 yards for women) into a series of circular scoring zones on the ground surrounding a marker flag.
